5-6-7-8 Your Way To A Better You!

Three Types of Belly Dancing Styles

The art of belly dancing had its beginning in America during the 1950’s in America. It was marketed as a way to entertain your husband. It gained mass popularity, and has continued to be popular with thousands of women.

There are three popular styles which women can now pursue according to their individual interests.

Cabaret or night club dancing is very popular and in demand for entertainment functions.
Folkloric dancing is attractive to those who have an historic and cultural interest in Middle Eastern dancing.
Tribal Fusion is an American inspired dance blending Flamenco, Middle Eastern, and Ballet into its movements.
The costumes also help to indicate the style of dancing which is being performed.

Cabaret or night club dancing is Turkish and Egyptian costuming. These costumes are very figure flattering and made of glamour or fancy fabrics associated with evening glamour.
Folkloric consists of being covered from neck to ankle with cottons or wool fabric of colored patterns. The country being represented will dictate its style.
American tribal fusion costumes usually consist of black fitted pants with a bottom flare and black tops. Colored accessories of original inventiveness may adorn the basic pant and top. Tattoos are popular among this group of dancers.
Belly dancing enthusiasts in America have three choices of interests. This writer recommends taking cabaret and folkloric classes before attempting American tribal fusion. It is well worth understanding the steps, dance movements, and motivation behind each style.

Each belly dancing style has a different posture, attitude, and body movements. Some steps may feel very comfortable and other dance movements may require a great deal of effort and much practicing. Just as one progresses through the grades in school, likewise, it is worth progressing through the different forms of belly dancing until you find your niche.

Regardless of which belly dancing style you choose to study, there is much to learn and each style will hold your interest for many years.

All three belly dancing styles will help with physical fitness for both weight loss and physical toning. The costumes and public performing are other motivations for many women to continue a weight loss program. There are costumes which will help the dancer to maintain her attractiveness as she journeys towards physical fitness and weight loss.

Another feature of taking belly dancing classes is the satisfaction which women gain practicing their creativity, using their imagination, cultural dance education, and pursuing a hidden fantasy.

Summary: Women enjoy belly dancing for these reasons:

The art of dancing
Physical Fitness
Mental discipline
Psychological satisfaction with creativity, imagination, and fantasy
Wearing beautiful costumes
Possibility of being a public performer
Self-entertainment
Enjoyment and fun

The Stella Cabeca Story Then and Now part 27

part 27

George and I enjoyed the best years together in our marriage and our dance life. We took dance lessons together in 2 step, waltz, EC swing, and Cha Cha. George did not line dance but supported and helped me with step sheets music, organizing classes, Class schedules and calendars. He was there to check people in at the door when I started teaching in community centers, making sure I got home safe from CW clubs and bars and later from gigs I was booked for such as private functions, birthday parties, company events and private club functions.

We also started Couples dance lessons at our community Center in NMB and George taught with me often remembering the sequences and really good helping the men to lead the women through the routines. When I look back it’s amazing to think how incredible he was and had never danced in his life till he was 50 years old.

Once I had made a name for myself locally, I started to be asked to teach at events and workshops throughout the state of Florida and this was a big step towards taking my career to a higher level. The workshops were held usually at a hotel with several ballrooms set aside with several dance instructors from Florida and from other states coming in to teach dances. Back then was usually 1 to 3 dance rooms and only a few instructors with dance lessons in the day and then review of dances and open dance in one ballroom at night.

We had a lot of instructors, who came to learn and bring back new dances to teach their classes at home. I met and worked with many dancers and teachers and choreographers at these events. Through these events, I developed a new following of dancers and my workshops became well attended and I was invited to go to other events outside the state of Florida.

Unfortunately, it was not possible for me to travel to these events then, because George was working and was the main breadwinner and had part time job besides his full time job. We could not go away and I did not want to go without him so I stayed local most of the time. Even weekend events in Florida were difficult because his 2nd job for Miami Herald was 7 days a week. But we managed to find someone to do it for him so we could attend some of them and then we met someone who gave us the opportunity to do European tour. Would be like dream come true to teach in England.

till next time. keep dancin’  Stella

Reasons Why You Should Consider Joining An Adult Dance Class – By Sharon Louise Johnston

1. Dance Improves Flexibility

Don’t worry about already being flexible when thinking about should you or shouldn’t you join a dance class. The movement that you take on during the lesson will gently increase your own flexibility through suitable stretching exercises set by the teacher. “Warm ups” and “Cool downs” both involve gentle stretching exercises and combinations which improve your range of movement, so taking part in a dance class within time will enable you to improve your flexibility.

2. Dancing Builds Strength

Strength is built in dance by forcing the muscles to resist against your own body weight. Hip hop, jazz, contemporary and ballet all involve jumping high into the air. To be able to do these movements, it requires a lot of strength in the leg muscles.

3. Dance Increases Endurance

Physical exercise like dance increases our endurance levels. When our muscles are required to work hard for long periods of time our endurance levels improve and we are able to work longer and harder without feeling tired or fatigue. Dancing is great for improving endurance, especially the allegro steps (jumps) in ballet, the continuous combinations danced in tap and the fast paced routines danced in hip hop and street styles. When we increase our heart rate we increase our stamina level. Regular dancing will build your endurance levels.

4. A Sense of Well-Being

By joining a dance class you can challenge and build on your social skills increasing your self-confidence. Dance is also a way to reduce stress and tension levels. When we do an activity like dancing we feel an improved sense of well-being, not only does your overall fitness improve but you also get your metabolism working better for you too. With most things at the touch of a button today it is very easy to become lazy and the less exercise we do, the less involved we feel we want to be in other areas of our lives. Through dance and music you’ll feel generally more uplifted in both body and mind which in turn gives us more energy.

Whether you’re pirouetting across the floor to a classical masterpiece written by Tchaikovsky or doing “body rolls” in all directions possible to Rihanna, you’re getting exercise and probably having a lot of fun at the same time. Dancing offers us so many benefits as discussed in this article, but not forgetting the additional cardiovascular conditioning, stronger bones and good posture benefits also. Least important possibly, but still a pro to consider is that you don’t need to “feel the fear” of dancing at parties anymore. In fact you might find the performer in you yet!

Stella’s Holiday Message 2016

Stella’s Holiday Message 2016

Well my dear friends had been quite a year this year with many trials and tribulations. I have been hospitalized several times this year with blood clots in both lungs and complications from coming off the medication after clot in leg and then going back on medication. Have had to miss many weeks of teaching my dance classes but you have all stood by me and supported me throughout. Your generosity financially and emotionally seems without limits.
No matter what I experienced, your love and constant words of encouragement have given me the strength to keep fighting back. I am getting stronger every day am once again off the Xarelto blood thinners. So after many extensive tests were unable to find underlying cause of clots. Am on aspirin a day and hope it keeps the clots away.
Despite all the health problems I was able to cruise with Ira and Diane and visit friends in The Keys, Boston, Missouri, and Tampa. Had concerns about flying because of blood clots but doctors allowed short trips whilst still taking medicine now am going to stay close to home till we feel more secure about my situation being off the medicine. I feel that I am going to be alright and hope to get completely strong again and hope to be able to fly home to see my family in England next year. It has been so many years since I was home with my family.
So I have goals and a sense of direction moving forward. I love teaching my day classes here locally and will continue to do this for many more years. I’m so happy all my dance family returning here to my classes for the winter. Amazes me how many years you have been coming to me and never miss a beat the entire season you are here in Florida. I will try to make this another great season for you I am teaching throughout all the holidays this year so we can dance at least once a week somewhere. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season; I wish you good health and happiness always. You are in my heart every time I see your smiling faces on my dance floor. Happy New Year 2017!
Love always your
Dance Guru Stella Cabeca.
