The Stella Cabeca Story Then and Now part 27

part 27

George and I enjoyed the best years together in our marriage and our dance life. We took dance lessons together in 2 step, waltz, EC swing, and Cha Cha. George did not line dance but supported and helped me with step sheets music, organizing classes, Class schedules and calendars. He was there to check people in at the door when I started teaching in community centers, making sure I got home safe from CW clubs and bars and later from gigs I was booked for such as private functions, birthday parties, company events and private club functions.

We also started Couples dance lessons at our community Center in NMB and George taught with me often remembering the sequences and really good helping the men to lead the women through the routines. When I look back it’s amazing to think how incredible he was and had never danced in his life till he was 50 years old.

Once I had made a name for myself locally, I started to be asked to teach at events and workshops throughout the state of Florida and this was a big step towards taking my career to a higher level. The workshops were held usually at a hotel with several ballrooms set aside with several dance instructors from Florida and from other states coming in to teach dances. Back then was usually 1 to 3 dance rooms and only a few instructors with dance lessons in the day and then review of dances and open dance in one ballroom at night.

We had a lot of instructors, who came to learn and bring back new dances to teach their classes at home. I met and worked with many dancers and teachers and choreographers at these events. Through these events, I developed a new following of dancers and my workshops became well attended and I was invited to go to other events outside the state of Florida.

Unfortunately, it was not possible for me to travel to these events then, because George was working and was the main breadwinner and had part time job besides his full time job. We could not go away and I did not want to go without him so I stayed local most of the time. Even weekend events in Florida were difficult because his 2nd job for Miami Herald was 7 days a week. But we managed to find someone to do it for him so we could attend some of them and then we met someone who gave us the opportunity to do European tour. Would be like dream come true to teach in England.

Reasons Why You Should Consider Joining An Adult Dance Class – By Sharon Louise Johnston

1. Dance Improves Flexibility

Don’t worry about already being flexible when thinking about should you or shouldn’t you join a dance class. The movement that you take on during the lesson will gently increase your own flexibility through suitable stretching exercises set by the teacher. “Warm ups” and “Cool downs” both involve gentle stretching exercises and combinations which improve your range of movement, so taking part in a dance class within time will enable you to improve your flexibility.

2. Dancing Builds Strength

Strength is built in dance by forcing the muscles to resist against your own body weight. Hip hop, jazz, contemporary and ballet all involve jumping high into the air. To be able to do these movements, it requires a lot of strength in the leg muscles.

3. Dance Increases Endurance

Physical exercise like dance increases our endurance levels. When our muscles are required to work hard for long periods of time our endurance levels improve and we are able to work longer and harder without feeling tired or fatigue. Dancing is great for improving endurance, especially the allegro steps (jumps) in ballet, the continuous combinations danced in tap and the fast paced routines danced in hip hop and street styles. When we increase our heart rate we increase our stamina level. Regular dancing will build your endurance levels.

4. A Sense of Well-Being

By joining a dance class you can challenge and build on your social skills increasing your self-confidence. Dance is also a way to reduce stress and tension levels. When we do an activity like dancing we feel an improved sense of well-being, not only does your overall fitness improve but you also get your metabolism working better for you too. With most things at the touch of a button today it is very easy to become lazy and the less exercise we do, the less involved we feel we want to be in other areas of our lives. Through dance and music you’ll feel generally more uplifted in both body and mind which in turn gives us more energy.

Whether you’re pirouetting across the floor to a classical masterpiece written by Tchaikovsky or doing “body rolls” in all directions possible to Rihanna, you’re getting exercise and probably having a lot of fun at the same time. Dancing offers us so many benefits as discussed in this article, but not forgetting the additional cardiovascular conditioning, stronger bones and good posture benefits also. Least important possibly, but still a pro to consider is that you don’t need to “feel the fear” of dancing at parties anymore. In fact you might find the performer in you yet!

Many of my friends talked about wanting to plan a trip together so through friends we rented a bus from the church. Side of bus said (Christians In Action) and we filled the bus with 40 dancers/friends. We drove from Miami Beach to Nashville visiting Grand Old Opry. We saw the last performance of Grandpa Jones and were invited to line dance in the isles of the theatre never done before. We were on live TV performing my choreography at Wild Horse Saloon, dance was called East Coastin. I met many nationally known C/W artist and another live TV show. River boat cruises and tour Opry land hotel was amazing trip we never forgot was my first and only road trip.

Filled every day with dance and tours and performances. Now I decided we should go on a cruise and try to arrange line dance group, and figure out how to arrange for our dancers to have lessons in ship. Just so happened one of my friends who danced was also a travel agent and so we put together a Dance Cruise. The ship was huge(LOL) Dolphin cruise line “The Seabreeze ” there was one small open deck at back of ship that the entire guests and crew came out on to at night to dance.

I met many young dance teachers and choreographers at these events. I remember one young man in particular. At an event, I was just visiting;I had heard about him but never seen him in person. He walked in the room; people were digging and poking me whispering “that’s Guyton ” all excited and a little crazy.

He was quiet seemed a little sad-faced, sitting looking down at the floor; I was thinking what are they making such a fuss about? Well, I took his workshop and learned some amazing dances and thought wow this guy is going to be big someday.

Another time, I went to an event called Boot Camp right in my neighborhood. It was awesome, I saw local dance team Rockin Renegades perform. It was one of the best performances I had ever seen. The leader and choreographer of this team was a young lady named Jennifer Toolen. Jennifer later danced with me for many years in fact, she used to dance at my classes in Tamarac. She eventually married and became pregnant with her son. I watched that baby growing as she danced through her pregnancy.

She went in to become a well-known instructor, choreographer, winning dance competitions as a solo competitor and with her team. She is the director of several of the biggest line dance events in the USA. Including The Tampa Bay Line dance.

Many songs and new local artist appeared at our club we debuted and hosted the song Fever with Jeff More. I taught the dance that night and did it to his live performance. That dance and song are still done in the clubs today.

Also guest singer of Buff Little Girls, Pete Andrews came to sing his hit song and we debut line dance to his song, which is also still being done in the clubs today. Pure Country was the beginning of many dances and music that we played there that became long lasting hits. Another example was a song called Swamp Thing, anyone who line dances today will know of this song and do a dance to it. I taught the dance by Max Perry and played a song Old Weakness a Country Cha song but did not have the song Swamp Thing which I found out was Techno music by a band called Grid from Germany. So I asked my brother Charles in England who is a music fanatic to get it for me which he did. When it arrived in my mail box I was so excited and could not wait to do the dance that night at the club to this song. But when I got to the club they refused to play it because they said it was not Country and back in those days the Country bars would only play Country music.
